Academy Awards 2024 winners - full list

 ast sunday, the Oscars took place in a ceremony with no big surprises, no big thrills and no huge iconic moments... but it got some all timers as winners: Cillian Murphy's win for Oppenheimer still amazes me (such an internal and subtle performance getting the gold), The Zone of Interest in Best Sound (chilling and perfectly balanced work), Poor Things in Best Costume Design and Best Production Design and The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar for Best Live Action Short Film (marking Wes Anderson's first Oscar win of his career). On the other hand, I felt sad for Lily Gladstone not winning Best Actress for Killers of the Flower Moon (such a soulful devastating performance), but Emma Stone was also a very worthy winner for playing the charismatic Bella Baxter in Poor Things.

In a night Oppenheimer won big (and its Summer "nemesis" Barbie only took Best Original Song, turning Billie Eilish into the youngest double Oscar winner in history), there were few films that won more than 1 trophy: only Oppenheimer, Poor Things and The Zone of Interest were multiple Oscar winners. It marks a departure of the previous AMPAS philosophy of spreading the wealth - for the second year in a row (third if you consider Dune's 6 technical wins back in the Oscars 2022), there's a big winner: Oppenheimer won 7 prizes and Everything Everywhere All at Once also won 7 prizes the year before.  Is there a new trend of fully embracing an Oscar favorite or are films getting bigger and better recently?

REVIEW: "Challengers"

  Challengers   is a movie that's actually "hard" to review because there are elements I truly loved and others... not so much. And while it's fair to say it isn't a perfect movie, it sure is a solid one. It's sexy, vibrant and fueled by its charismatic three leads -   Challengers   is a winning match for director Luca Guadagnino. Guadagnino is no stranger to complex characters and plays with three depicable people in this film by creating an intriguing love triangle between an alpha woman, an unapologetic bissexual and a cute guy who proves to be a manipulative mastermind... and I believe this is giving a lot away already. While explaining the nature of their connections might be too much of a spoiler since the movie's narrative is exactly a study about how these three characters connect and have connected before, it's no crime to say that the narrative goes in two main lines and a secondary one, made mostly of flashbacks. Tiny Reviews: "Materialists", "Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy", "The Ugly Stepsister" and "Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning"

  ATERIALISTS It's not what it was marketed:  Materialists  sure have some funny moments, but it's a poignant meditation about how transactional dating someone has become. Yes, it has some laughs and it's core is truly romantic, but Celine Song's latest is a study about modern-day relationships, expectations and love vs functionality. The first act shows promise, the second act is a step down, but the third one is exquisite as it exposes some topics with honesty and sentimental value. Dakota Johnson proves she's a true leading lady as she commands the screen with her very singular charm, while Chris Evans gets (finally) an opportunity to shine with a beautiful monologue. Not everything worked, but I felt truly connected. It's a movie I am sure will age beautifully in my mind. Beautiful cinematography (Shabier Kirchner sure is a promising name). Another big win for Song with a totally different film from Past Lives. Rating: 8,5/10 BRIDGET JONES: MAD ABOUT THE BOY...
