TOP 35 Actors and Actresses Under 35 Working Today - 2025

The almost annual TOP 35 Actors and Actresses Under 35 Working Today is out, with me considering the performers' performances of 2016 also. We have a few changes since last year's list, with Greta Gerwig toping the list thanks to her last 3 great performances in Mistress America, Maggie's Plan and the Oscar buzzy acting turn in 20th Century Women. Scarlett Johansson comes second with her latest distinguished performance being in 2014 (Under the Skin), but she managed to be at the spotligh this year thanks to her fine turns in critically acclaimed movies: Hail, Caesar!, Captain America: Civil War, The Jungle Book (voice) and Sing (voice). Emily Blunt adds another great performance to her resume in The Girl on the Train and she comes third, while Elle Fanning's turning into one of the finest actresses and she's getting to play more adult and complex parts like The Neon Demon and 20th Century Women's (her two best performances since Super 8). Finally, Adam Driver comes fifth with an incredible duo of performances last year in Paterson (pure perfection) and in Silence (fine under Scorsese's direction), being the first male on the list.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Natalie Portman are out - they will complete 36 in 2017, but they have our respect for all the consecutive years between the very best of their generation.

REVIEW: "The Secret Agent" / "O Agente Secreto"

Director:  Kleber Mendonça Filho Writer:  Kleber Mendonça Filho Starring:  Wagner Moura, Alice Carvalho, Gabriel Leone, Maria Fernanda Cândido, Isabél Zuaa, Udo Kier  and  Tânia Maria I was fortunate for having Kleber Mendonça Filho presenting the film himself in my session, because he recalled some aspects of the movie he wanted the audience to be aware of: this movie represents an act of resistance and an ode to the importance of the press and cultural spaces (like a theatre) as powerful weapons against authoritarian regimes. So,  The Secret Agent  is actually some kind of parable about acts of resistance in the form of a political thriller - it's a slow burning film that is smartly balanced with truly funny comedic scenes and some moments of pure human joy that show the movie's true heart beneath its disguise - it's more of a satire to a corrupt system than a manhunt film. It's some kind of cinematic marvel in its own right. The story presents itsel...

REVIEW: "Challengers"

Challengers   is a movie that's actually "hard" to review because there are elements I truly loved and others... not so much. And while it's fair to say it isn't a perfect movie, it sure is a solid one. It's sexy, vibrant and fueled by its charismatic three leads -   Challengers   is a winning match for director Luca Guadagnino. Guadagnino is no stranger to complex characters and plays with three depicable people in this film by creating an intriguing love triangle between an alpha woman, an unapologetic bissexual and a cute guy who proves to be a manipulative mastermind... and I believe this is giving a lot away already. While explaining the nature of their connections might be too much of a spoiler since the movie's narrative is exactly a study about how these three characters connect and have connected before, it's no crime to say that the narrative goes in two main lines and a secondary one, made mostly of flashbacks. That's the way Guad...

Tiny Reviews: "Materialists", "Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy", "The Ugly Stepsister" and "Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning"

ATERIALISTS It's not what it was marketed:  Materialists  sure have some funny moments, but it's a poignant meditation about how transactional dating someone has become. Yes, it has some laughs and it's core is truly romantic, but Celine Song's latest is a study about modern-day relationships, expectations and love vs functionality. The first act shows promise, the second act is a step down, but the third one is exquisite as it exposes some topics with honesty and sentimental value. Dakota Johnson proves she's a true leading lady as she commands the screen with her very singular charm, while Chris Evans gets (finally) an opportunity to shine with a beautiful monologue. Not everything worked, but I felt truly connected. It's a movie I am sure will age beautifully in my mind. Beautiful cinematography (Shabier Kirchner sure is a promising name). Another big win for Song with a totally different film from Past Lives. Rating: 8,5/10 BRIDGET JONES: MAD ABOUT THE BOY...
