Academy Awards 2024 nominees - full list

he nominations for the Academy Awards 2024 were announced last Tuesday (January 23th) and while Oppenheimer leads as the most nominated movie of the year, there were a few shocking misses and some welcome inclusions. 
In fact, last Tuesday's announcement came with a couple of surprises: no Greta Gerwig in Best Director for Barbie (something I had always predicted, but the internet wasn't ready for ), Killers of the Flower Moon missing Best Adapted Screenplay, but The Zone of Interest gets nominated there; two international films in the Best Picture lineup (Anatomy of a Fall and The Zone of Interest); John Williams got nominated for his score for the latest installment of Indiana Jones (like... REALLY?); Napoleon gets nominated in 3 craft categories; Past Lives makes the Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay, but somehow misses Best Actress for Greta Lee...; No Saltburn, no Asteroid City, no Fallen Leaves, The Iron Claw or John Wick: Chapter 4...!; May December is our sole screenplay nominee film of the year, which means Charles Melton misses Best Supporting Actor for one of the best performances of the year and his co-stars Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman also fail to land nods; and... The Boy and the Heron and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse only get in Best Animated Feature despite both animated features being deserving of some recognition in other categories.

REVIEW: "Challengers"

  Challengers   is a movie that's actually "hard" to review because there are elements I truly loved and others... not so much. And while it's fair to say it isn't a perfect movie, it sure is a solid one. It's sexy, vibrant and fueled by its charismatic three leads -   Challengers   is a winning match for director Luca Guadagnino. Guadagnino is no stranger to complex characters and plays with three depicable people in this film by creating an intriguing love triangle between an alpha woman, an unapologetic bissexual and a cute guy who proves to be a manipulative mastermind... and I believe this is giving a lot away already. While explaining the nature of their connections might be too much of a spoiler since the movie's narrative is exactly a study about how these three characters connect and have connected before, it's no crime to say that the narrative goes in two main lines and a secondary one, made mostly of flashbacks. Tiny Reviews: "Materialists", "Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy", "The Ugly Stepsister" and "Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning"

  ATERIALISTS It's not what it was marketed:  Materialists  sure have some funny moments, but it's a poignant meditation about how transactional dating someone has become. Yes, it has some laughs and it's core is truly romantic, but Celine Song's latest is a study about modern-day relationships, expectations and love vs functionality. The first act shows promise, the second act is a step down, but the third one is exquisite as it exposes some topics with honesty and sentimental value. Dakota Johnson proves she's a true leading lady as she commands the screen with her very singular charm, while Chris Evans gets (finally) an opportunity to shine with a beautiful monologue. Not everything worked, but I felt truly connected. It's a movie I am sure will age beautifully in my mind. Beautiful cinematography (Shabier Kirchner sure is a promising name). Another big win for Song with a totally different film from Past Lives. Rating: 8,5/10 BRIDGET JONES: MAD ABOUT THE BOY...
